Dialogue with master Zhao - documentary project

"Dialogue with Master Zhao" is a reflective documentary that delves into the life and craft of Master Zhao, the esteemed Wooden Technician from XJTLU, In my roles as Gaffer and Director of Photography, I captured the nuanced world of a traditional craftsman amid modernity's swift currents.

In the documentary "Dialogue with Master Zhao," we are introduced to the seasoned Wooden Technician from Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), Master Zhao. This film explores his lifelong dedication to woodworking and his perspective on the craft's evolving role in today's rapidly developing world.

Serving as both Gaffer and Director of Photography, I have crafted a visual narrative that distinguishes itself from any genre I've previously encountered. My goal was to illuminate Master Zhao's personal and professional life, creating a cinematic space where traditional woodworking resonates amidst the cacophony of modern development.

The film transcends simple documentation. It's a metaphorical piece that captures the stark reality faced by artisans like Master Zhao, who uphold traditional values in the face of relentless progress. It's a narrative stitched from the quiet rhythm of his daily work, the whispering of wood grains, and the cultural richness of his craft—a narrative that required a careful dance of light and shadow to portray authentically.
